Have you ever had the desire to experience new opportunities? Has fear or apprehension prevented you from exploring new pathways? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you are not alone. Fear and apprehension builds walls. It’s easy to fear something that is new or different to you; something out of your realm of experience. An easy – but unproductive — way to deal with that fear is to wall it off. These walls tend to keep one confined to a space that is familiar and of the norm. The feeling of comfort that develops limits our psychos from being open to exploring that which lies beyond the walls. One may say ‘I’m waiting for the right opportunity,’ or ‘I’m trying to get myself right.’ “Perfect moments rarely come. We must take the moments we have and strive to make them perfect,” says fashion designer and reality TV star Lisa Nicole Cloud.
How can these virtual barriers to our success be penetrated? This is necessary because if you are open to new and different people and things your world will become richer. Thinking outside the box is more than just a business cliché. It means approaching problems in new, innovative ways; conceptualizing problems differently; and understanding your position in relation to any particular situation in a way you’d never thought of before.
Preventing this proverbial box mentality begins well before we are ‘boxed in.’ Here are four ways to help one think outside the box and be effective with it.
- YOUR BELIEFS The first thing you’ve got to be willing to do is realize what’s constraining you in the first place and why. Refrain from believing that there is one set path to achieving your goals.
- RESPONSIBILITY Thinking outside the box is like exploring uncharted territory. You’re opening yourself up to new perspectives, beliefs, and paradigms. The space that awaits you outside the box is limitless, and must be handled with responsibility.
- DON’T JUDGE Opening up new ways of thinking will allow new levels of understanding of others’ choices. Releasing judgment opens up room for more abundance in our lives.
- BE CONFIDENT Life is limited only by the limitations you set on it.
By no means are the four suggestions the only ways to develop ‘out of the box’ thinking, but they are an excellent start. Take control of your life. Be a more awesome you.
