Run All Night sprinted its way into theaters on Friday the 13th and no, it’s not a horror flick. Instead, this film definitely raises the bar in the suspense department.
Run All Night is backed heavily by a strong and reputable cast of characters. Liam Nielsen (Taken) stars as Jimmy Conlon, the father of Mike Conlon. Jimmy is a former hit man with a long list of casualties under his belt and due to being an absentee father during his childhood years, Mike strives to do everything in his power not to follow in his dad’s path of unspeakable crimes and regrets. Mike’s a father himself and is doing his best to hold on to a limo driver job and the quest to pursue an honest living. Unfortunately for Mike—through no fault of his own—his life is about to spin out of control.
During a routine night of work, Mike is transporting a client to their destination. Little does he know that this client, Danny Maguire, is headed to reclaim his cash from a promised drug deal that failed to materialize. In a plot-developing twist, Danny is the pride and joy of Shawn Maguire, a former boss and childhood friend of Jimmy played by Ed Harris (The Abyss). Run All Night then shifts into gear as the money pick-up goes deadly wrong. Gunshots are ablaze as Mike now finds himself in danger not only from stray bullets, but the fact that he’s now a targeted witness to a crime in which he had nothing to do with. And regardless of being aquatinted by their fathers, this coincidence means nothing to Danny, who selfishly sees Mike solely as an eyewitness to a double murder which can put him at the scene and behind the trigger. Now it’s on.
Mike is not only running for his life; his luck has turned for the worse by a planned scheme to be framed by Danny’s father Shawn as the murderer. Suddenly having nowhere to turn, his estranged father steps out of the shadows and into the picture to protect him. Will Mike accept his father’s help or allow their frazzled relationship to persuade him to follow his own course of action?
After his decision is made, the twists and turns keep coming. The consistent heart-pounding suspense and drama continue at a torrid pace leading to the film’s highly anticipated climax.
While there are a few rough edges that might have needed a bit of a smoothing to provide an extra dose of realism and less predictability, Run All Night and its impressive cast do not disappoint. This thriller is well worth the time and ticket.
‘Til next time…
